Window Wreath Installation

Christmas is right around the corner and we have been decking the halls around here. Several years ago I started hanging window wreaths to give the exterior of our home some holiday cheer. There are lots of tutorials and fancy ways to hang wreaths (and I tried many of them) but at the end of the day I found that the simplest installation for our windows requires nothing more than tying a knot in ribbon. This photo of our home was the first time that I attempted window wreaths using bright red ribbon. I love how classic it looked with the red brick. These bright red ribbons lasted 3 seasons before they finally bleached out by the sun and snow. Since I had to replace the ribbons this year I thought I’d bring you along in the VERY simple process of exterior wreath hanging. I hope it helps if you decide you would like to also create this look for your own home.

*Note that since every home has windows of different sizes, shapes, and have different ways of opening and closing… Take your own windows into considerations and use my instructions below as a general guideline. Tweak as you see fit for your own window needs.

Supplies Needed

Step-by-Step

  1. Fluff your wreath if it has lost its shape. Wear gloves and gently pull wired stems into place.

  2. Using a scissors, cut wired ribbon into strips for hanging. My windows took 5ft of ribbon per window. This may be more or less on yours depending on your window size. For an exact measurement, use a tape measure to measure the distance from the top of your window frame to the top of the wreath. Then, double that length and add 1 additional foot for the knot. On my window, the distance between the top of the window frame to top of my wreath was 2ft x 2 to create a loop + 1ft for the knot = 5ft.

  3. Loop the cut ribbon through the top of the wreath and knot the end.

  4. Attach a matching bow to the same place on the wreath as the attached ribbon.

  5. To install, open window and slide your wreath to a centered position. Close the window with the knot on the inside. If you want to be extra strong, add a small thumb tack to keep the ribbon in place. We don’t open our windows so do not do this extra step.

A knot is all that is needed to keep a wreath in place.

There you have it! The easiest DIY around! If you try these window wreathes on your own home, I hope you share it with me over on IG @silvertoothhome or send me a message to share how it went. Wishing you the best start to your holiday season, friends. Thank you for spending a bit of your holiday magic with me.
