Cornhusk Centerpiece

When life gives you lemons, or cornstalks as it seems, make something beautiful!

When life gives you lemons…

When life gives you lemons, or cornstalks as it seems, make something beautiful!

The holidays are stressful. Your table centerpiece doesn’t need to be. I say this all the time but people matter most. Not a perfectly set tablescape, not a gourmet meal, but the people themselves. I need to remind myself of this often not because I don’t love my people but because I so greatly enjoy to making things beautiful. But at the end of the day it really doesn't matter what type of table we eat at but that we’re enjoying it with those we love. I need to remind myself that what I have is enough and this Thanksgiving and what I have just happens to be a lot of cornstalks!

I wish I could give you so fancy way to create this cornstalk centerpiece but honestly this happy accident was as easy as boiling water. As we cleaned up our dying mums and rotting pumpkins last weekend I also took down the cornstalks on our front porch. I couldn’t resist pulling a few pieces to see what it would look like in an arrangement. What do you know- the arrangement worked! All that I did to create this “floral arrangement” was place the cornstalk tops into a vintage soup bowl along with a few ears of corn to give the dried leaves some stability. Definitely a win.

Place Setting Markers

As an extra touch to the table, I used my preserved pinecones for place setting markers. You can learn how to make your own pinecones by reading my blog post Pinecones & Leaves. There you will find simple instructions on how to prepare your foraged pinecones for the table. You really don’t want to bring pinecones straight to the table from the outdoors- that would be an invitation for critters to join you and lets just not add that kind of stress!

Now, wish me luck as I scramble to get our menu together, fight crowds at the grocery store and pray our family stays healthy for Thanksgiving next week. Wishing you the best and remember to enjoy your people.
