Fire Starters

DIY Fire Starters

There is something about Januaryā€¦ itā€™s just so dark and gloomy. After the sparkle of the holidays has faded away but the nights still roll in early- itā€™s easy for me to feel sluggish. Itā€™s in these long winter months that Iā€™m always on the hunt for ways to warm the body and lighten the soul. It's this time of year that I find myself filling our home with candles, making more hot tea and creating things like these fire starters. As I sit in my office wearing a double layer of socks, I thought it would be a great time to share with you these fire starters I made a few weeks ago. I mean, maybe writing about something warm will make this room feel a bit warmer? One could only hope.

I know that there are many other successful ways to light a fire but pretty PLUS useful is my jam. Additionally, these fire starters arenā€™t an original idea- Pinterest is chalked full of versions of them- but Iā€™d love to share my own process of making mine.

We have been having so much fun using these adorable fire starters this winter. They can be used for starting outdoor bonfires or indoor wood burning fireplaces as well. I also think they would be perfect for a house warming gift too, donā€™t you think? They are so cute, smell amazing and most importantly, do an amazing job at getting that fire blazing.

Fire Starter Instructions

ā€œIngredientsā€ Needed

Below Iā€™ve listed the ā€œingredientsā€ that I used. However, you can definitely get creative by substituting natural elements for things such as dried herbs, sprigs or rosemary, pine needles, citrus peels, whole cloves, etc.

Natural Elements

For these fire starters, I used a pinecone, cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, dried citrus and star anise.

Tools Needed

  • Muffin pan

  • Old cooking pot

  • Disposable spoon

How to Assemble

  1. Assemble your fire starters by lining muffin pan with cupcake liners.

  2. Add natural elements into each cupcake liner.

  3. Add candle wick into the center of each liner. I found it stood more secure next to the pinecone.

  4. Melt wax over low heat. The wax will go from flakes to milky liquid to clear liquid. Once wax is clear, remove from heat.

  5. Carefully pour melted wax into each liner. Fill 1/4 to 1/2 the way up the side of each cupcake liner.

  6. Let the fire starters sit at room temperature for a few hours to harden.

  7. Remove from muffin pan.

To Gift

If creating these fire starters for gifts, you will need the following items.
