Valentine’s Day Stationery
Today we are preparing for the annual Valentine’s Day card exchange at the kids school. Since we had blank stationary on hand we set to making our own. In this project we are using potatoes and romaine lettuce to make heart and rose prints. All the inspiration comes from my talented sister-in-love, artist and teacher, Amanda O’Shaughnessy… the print making Queen! For waaayyy more on printmaking, visit her at www.thestudioartclub.com or over on social @studioart.club. Sign up for her classes, you’ll have an amazing time and learn a lot too.
DIY Stationery Supplies
Just a few simple craft supplies and everyday kitchen items are all you need for these cute Valentine’s Day cards.
Kitchen Knife
Red or Russet Potato (for heart prints)
Heart Stationery
Making the Heart Stamp
Cut the potato in half. Using a small knife and printable heart template, carefully carve a heart shape onto the flat side of the potato. Carve freestyle or use my heart template as a guide (I’ve included several heart sizes so you can fit the right one to your own potato). Even when using the template, each carving will come out unique art- like the ones you see here!
With a paint brush, apply paint to the heart shape on the potato.
Stamp the potato heart onto blank stationery.
Set aside until completely dried.
Making the Rose Stamp
Cut the end off of romaine lettuce. Set leaves aside and use the stem.
Using a paintbrush, apply paint to the lettuce stem.
Stamp the lettuce “rose” onto blank stationery and let dry before use.
Adding Hand Lettering
Once your stationery is completely dry it is time to add Valentine’s Day themed lettering. If you have amazing handwriting then free hand it! I, on the other hand, decided to trace mine by using a light box and a hand lettering template to transfer pretty writing onto the stationery. To do this, first lay the hand lettering template on a light box with the stationery on top of that. The light will show the text through onto your stationery from the template behind it. Then all you need to do is to trace the hand lettering onto the stationery with a pen or marker of choice.
I can’t wait to see your prints too! Let’s share together over at @silvertoothhome. Happy stamping! XOXO, LeAnn
